Mike Gones

Mike Gones established his civil engineering company in 1986 after working for six years as the assistant building official and land development engineer for the City of Santa Barbara. With a strong focus on civil and structural engineering, Gones’ company specializes in all aspects of custom residential work, including land development, site planning, building design and construction inspection.

The company takes a keen interest in green building projects and the engineering required for the use of alternative building materials. Gones has completed many structural projects that use recycled lumber for structural framing or are framed in light-gauge metal to entirely eliminate the use of wood in the structural phase of the building process. Other green materials Gones has employed include R control panels – prefabricated insulated panels which minimize labor and waste – and insulated concrete forms, that provide for both the structure and insulation, and in-steel panels consisting of shotcrete over foam insulation.

Many of his civil engineering projects incorporate various stormwater management techniques aimed at minimizing storm water runoff, storing stormwater for landscape purposes, recharging the groundwater basin, and providing on site pollutant filtration. Philisophically, the company is headed toward utilizing a low impact development approach to the future projects.

Mike Gones received his engineering degree from the University of Missouri and has been registered as a Professional Engineer in California since 1983. In addition to his work as an assistant building official and land development engineer for the City of Santa Barbara, Gones has also served as the assistant manager of the Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory in Seattle and previously was licensed as a special inspector for concrete and timber piles.

Although his company’s primary focus is on custom residential work, Gones has consulted on a variety of multi-unit and commercial projects, including condominiums, churches, parking lots and small office buildings.
